Purpose

The Oconee 9/11 Memorial will seek to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, as they unfolded at the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon in Arlington County, VA and in a field near Shanksville, PA.

The Committee has obtained a piece of steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center, as well as two pieces of concrete from that portion of the Pentagon destroyed in the attack.  Soil has also been obtained from near the hallowed ground where the heroes of Flight 93 forced another jet targeted for our nation's capital to crash.

The School District of Oconee County has deeded a parcel of property near the site of the new Walhalla High School on SC Highway 11 on which to build the memorial.

The committee's intent is to create a site that will honor those who sacrificed their live on 9/11, will serve to educate generations of children about this important moment in American history, will allow for quiet reflection on the sacrifice and service required of Americans, and will be a point of interest for visitors to our area.

The 9/11 Memorial site is expected to contain separate areas dedicated to each of the three 9/11 attack sites.
